HPU students to rally for Ugandan refugees tonight

Advertiser Staff

More than 100 students from Hawai'i Pacific University will camp out at the state Capitol tonight to raise awareness about the displaced children and families in northern Uganda.

From 7 p.m. today to 7 a.m. tomorrow, the students and at least another 50 other supporters will stay overnight as part of the nationwide "Displace Me" event organized by Invisible Children Inc.

Ten years ago, thousands of Ugandans were evicted from their homes and transported to camps. These camps remain crowded, housing at least 1.7 million people. The purpose of "Displace Me" is to bring attention to the daily ordeals of the children and families displaced by war.

The event will feature a candlelight vigil, a silent march and a screening of the documentary "Invisible Children."

Established in 2005, Invisible Children Inc. is a nonprofit organization created after the release of the documentary by the same name. For more information, visit www.invisiblechildren.com.
