Hawai'i Hose will face Lawler in Icon Sports fight

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i fighter Kala Kolohe Hose will challenge Iowa's Robbie Lawler for the Icon Sport organization's middleweight world championship on June 30 at the Blaisdell Center Arena.

Hose was announced as Lawler's opponent at a press conference today.

Hose, who trains at the Bad Intentions gym in Wai'anae, has a professional mixed martial arts record of 6-1. He lost the first bout of his career in 2005, but has since knocked out his last six opponents.

"If (Lawler) think I'm a stepping stone ... he better think twice," Hose said. "I'm here to come after him and he will be my stepping stone. It's my time to shine."

Lawler is 14-4 and reclaimed the Icon Sport middleweight (185 pounds) championship with a knockout victory over Frank Trigg on March 31. He is the No. 8-ranked middleweight fighter in the world by MMA Weekly.

"Hose has that rare gift of one-punch knockout power, so Lawler better not take him lightly," Icon Sport president T. Jay Thompson said.

In other martial arts news, the official weigh-ins for the K-1 World Grand Prix in Hawai'i were completed today.

The K-1 event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Blaisdell Center Arena.

The main event will feature Morocco's Badr Hari against Japan's Yusuke Fujimoto for the K-1 heavyweight championship. There will also be an eight-man super-heavyweight tournament.

In a separate bout, Kane'ohe's Mike Malone will face Korea's Hong-Man Choi. Malone is 6 feet and 217 pounds; Choi is 7-2 and 355 pounds.
