Rainbow Wahine water polo team defeats Aztecs

Advertiser Staff

TEMPE, Ariz. — The fourth-seeded University of Hawai'i water polo team defeated fifth-seeded San Diego State 19-12 in a quarterfinal match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament today, possibly qualifying the Rainbow Wahine for the NCAA tournament.

Angela Turnbull scored five goals for Hawai'i (17-8) and Kristy Bagnall and Kelly Mason added four each. Meike De Nooy had eight saves.

The Rainbow Wahine needed to win yesterday and today to assure themselves of an at-large berth to next month's NCAA tournament. If Hawai'i qualifies, it will be their third straight trip to the tournament.

Hawai'i led 5-1 after the first quarter and 7-4 at halftime. The Rainbow Wahine will meet top-seeded Stanford (24-1) tomorrow in the semifinals.

Jenna Schuster led the Aztecs (26-8) with seven goals.
