Rainbows rout New Mexico State in baseball, 21-6

Hawai'i combined for 19 runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to romp New Mexico State, 21-6, today at Las Cruces, N.M., to take the Western Athletic Conference series opener.Vinnie Catricala batted 4 for 5 with two RBIs to help UH reach a season high in scoring.
Hawai'i trailed 4-2 after six innings.
Mark Rodrigues allowed four runs, seven hits, two walks and a hit batsman in 4 2/3 innings for the Rainbows (28-17 overall, 9-7 WAC). Matt Daly (4-1) went 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, walking two and striking out three. Jeff Soskin pitched the final two innings.
Dillon Smith (3-4) was charged with six runs (four earned), 11 hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six-plus innings for the Aggies (19-25, 4-12).
The Aggies jumped on Rodrigues in the first inning in taking a 1-0 lead. A one out walk, single and walk loaded the bases to set up Joseph Scaperotta's RBI force play at second.
But the Rainbows tied it in a hurry in the top of the second on Kris Sanchez's lead-off home run. It was his ninth homer of the season.
Hawai'i took a 2-1 lead in the third. Eli Christensen singled and took second on Jon Hee's single. A wild pitch allowed Christensen to take third, as Hee held first. Kevin Macdonald grounded out to second to score Christensen and send Hee to second. Hee took third when Justin Frash flied out to center.
The Aggies tied it at 2 in the bottom of the third. Richard Stout led off with a single, took second on a sacrifice, advanced to third on a ground out to second and scored on Tyler Hardt's single to right.
The Aggies took the lead in the fifth. Richard Stout was hit by a pitch and took second on Ari Loiben's bunt single. Marcus Quade's double to left scored Stout, but Loiben was thrown out at home trying to score. Hardt's ground out to the catcher moved Quade to third, where he scored on Scaperotta's double to left, making it 4-2 and ending Rodrigues' night. Matt Daly came in and after a wild pitch sent Scaperotta to third, retired Leo Aguirre on a grounder to second to end the inning.
Hawai'i sent 10 batters to the plate in a five-run seventh to regain the lead. Kevin Macdonald had a two-run single with the bases loaded that chased Smith and tied the game at 4. Matt Van Deelen was greeted by an RBI single by Frash to put UH ahead, 5-4. They added two more runs on an RBI force by Sanchez and an RBI single by Evan Zimny to make it 7-4.
The Rainbows then sent 16 batters up in a 10-run seventh to increase their lead to 17-4.
The Aggies got a run against Soskin in the eighth to make it 17-5, but UH added four in the ninth when nine batters went to the plate. The Aggies added one in the ninth to make it look like a football score.
The teams will complete the series in a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 10 a.m. The doubleheader was scheduled in anticipation of inclement weather on Sunday.
