Waiting is the hardest part

Video: Draft Day awaits former UH center Samson Satele

Most NFL teams want Samson Satele to play center. "It doesn't matter to me. I'll play guard, wherever," he said.

The most difficult thing about living a dream, former University of Hawai'i football player Samson Satele has learned, is being able to sleep.

"I'm usually a calm person," said Satele, who is awaiting tomorrow's first day of the National Football League draft. "But I'm telling you, I'm so nervous I can't even sleep at night."

Most NFL scouts rate Satele as the second-best available center, behind Southern California's Ryan Kalil. He is expected to be drafted in tomorrow's three rounds.

At least that's what Satele has been told. Unlike his cousins who also are pro prospects — running back Nate Ilaoa and defensive end Melila Purcell III — Satele avoids reading mock drafts or Internet reports.

"I took a peek once, and it got me kind of mad," Satele said of the critical comments. "All they do is talk, talk, talk."

Satele, who trained in Houston for nearly two months, returned to Hawai'i following last month's Pro Day in Carson, Calif. Each day he goes to UH, where he lifts weights from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and performs running drills from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

"I try to do a lot of stretching," he said. "That's what we learned when we trained in Houston."

Nearly every NFL team has contacted Satele. All but a few want him to play center in the pros.

"It doesn't matter to me," he said. "I'll play guard, wherever."

Satele said he has been a dedicated viewer of the draft telecast.

"Now it's finally my turn," Satele said. "I can't believe it. It's weird. My heart is beating faster than ever."

Satele, Purcell and Ilaoa will spend tomorrow at the home of their uncle, Alvis Satele, a former UH linebacker. Alvis' son Brashton also is a UH linebacker.

Yesterday, Samson Satele went grocery shopping. "Regular stuff for a barbecue party," he said. "It's going to be a nice family gathering.

"You know, I've been playing football for 15 years," he added. "The draft is hours away instead of 15 years away. It's amazing that I'm in this position. It brings tears to my eyes when I think about it."
