Tadd Fujikawa shot a 4-over-par 74 in the second round of the Chunichi Crowns tournament at the Nagoya Golf Club's Wago course yesterday and failed to make the cut for the final two rounds, missing by two strokes when the field was trimmed to the top 60 players and ties.
The Moanalua High sophomore, who made the cut at the Sony Open in Hawai'i in January, finished tied for 69th place with a two-day total of 10-over-par 150 in the Japan Golf Tour Organization event.
Toru Taniguchi, who shot a 2-under 68 yesterday, led the 104-man field at 4-under 136. Hirofumi Miyase was a stroke back after shooting a 70—137.
Hawai'i's Gregory Meyer followed his opening-round 71 with a 73, and was in a tie for 24th place, eight strokes off the pace at 4-over 144. He easily made the cut, which was at 8-over-par.
Fujikawa struggled for a second day under windy conditions that reminded him of home.
"I told you wind in Hawai'i is tougher than here. However, today is almost same as Hawai'i," he said.
Fujikawa, who shot a 6-over-par 76 in the first round, recorded one birdie but five bogeys in the second round.
He bogeyed the 523-yard par-5 second hole yesterday, but quickly recovered with a birdie on the 443-yard par-4 third hole.
Fujikawa then bogeyed both the 370-yard, par-4 sixth hole and the 181-yard, par-3 seventh. He also bogeyed the 356-yard, par-4 12th and the 443-yard, par-4 14th.
The 16-year-old found the Japanese galleries to be knowledgeable. "The numbers of people in the gallery are smaller than in the U.S., but they watch our game more seriously, which I like," he said.
