Six Hokule'a crew return from Japan today

Advertiser Staff

Six of the crewmembers who sailed Hokule'a on the historic voyage from Yap to Okinawa will return to Honolulu this morning on a Japan Airlines flight from Narita that arrives 6:45 a.m.

The returning crew includes captain and navigator Nainoa Thompson, first mate and Maisu navigator Chadd Paishon, Pomai Bertelmann, Maile Neff, Dr. Pete Roney and Kaina Holomalia.

The crew sailed about 1,000 miles over 11 days for Hokule'a's first journey to Japan.

The voyage is scheduled to continue this morning, weather permitting.

Hokule'a, under captain and navigator Chad Baybayan, and escort boat Kama Hele under captain Mike Taylor, will sail from Itoman, Okinawa to Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu, a journey of about 455 miles that should take about six days.
