After much debate among fans and media and probably the team itself, the Oakland Raiders selected LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the first pick in today's NFL Draft.

The 72nd annual selection process of college athletes is being held in New York, with live television and radio coverage.

The 32 NFL teams will draft three rounds today and four more tomorrow.

Russell has rare ability at the quarterback position. He is blessed with size (6-5, 260) and an arm that might be the best in football. With one knee on the ground, he can throw the football 65 yards.

It was the eighth time in the past 10 years that a quarterback was selected No. 1 overall.
