Advertiser Staff

Joseph Scaperotta and Adam Harvey hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 6-all game to lead New Mexico State over Hawai'i, 8-6, today at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, N.M., in the first game of a doubleheader to even the Western Athletic Conference series at 1.

Kyle McFadden (2-1) came in from third base to pitch 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Aggies (20-25 overall, 5-12 WAC).

Jayson Kramer (3-3) gave up the two home runs, plus an unearned run in the sixth when a batter reached on an error, took third on a double and scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 6 for the Rainbows (28-18, 9-8).

UH starter Joshua Schneider gave up five runs, seven hits and a walk, striking out three, in five innings, while NMSU starter Noah Garza went 5 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (five earned), 11 hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

Hawai'i struck in the first inning against Garza. Jon Hee flared a single to right and Kevin Macdonald homered to left to give UH a 2-0 lead. But the lead was short-lived as the Aggies came back in the bottom half of the frame

with a three-run home run by Adam Harvey off Schneider.

The Rainbows regained the lead in the second. Landon Hernandez tied the game with a lead-off home run to left. Later, after two walks and an error, Brandon Haislet's two-run single put UH ahead, 5-3.

Kris Sanchez hit his second home run in as many games with a solo shot to left in the fourth to increase UH's lead to 6-3.

The Aggies pulled to within one on Ryan Gibson's two-run home run to make it 6-5.

The Aggies tied it in the sixth after Kramer struck out the first two batters to start the inning. Marcos Rosales reached on shortstop Eli Christensen's throwing error to first and took third on Ricky Philippi's double to right. A passed ball scored Rosales to tie the game at 6 and sent Philippi to third before Kramer struck out Kyle McFadden to end the inning.
