Psychologists launch free referral service

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Psychological Association will launch a free online referral service to aid the public in finding a psychologist as part of May's Mental Health Month in America.

A comprehensive list of hundreds of member doctors, which can be sorted by specialty, geographical location, gender, and other criteria, is available at www.hawaiipsych.org. Once on the Web site, click the "Find a Psychologist" link.

The HPA Web site also offers tips on how to determine whether a person might be in need of a psychologist. These indicators include a sudden change in appetite or weight, inability to sleep or desire to sleep too much, and/or lack of enthusiasm for things which used to bring joy. Stress from events such as divorce, having children, separation from loved ones, job loss or relocation, financial issues, or death of a family member can also be eased with help from a professional.

To help find a psychologist, the HPA recommends:

  • Contacting at least three psychologists by phone before choosing one to make an appointment.

  • Asking how long the doctor has been practicing.

  • Asking about the psychologist's experience with issues similar to yours.

  • Ensuring the doctor is licensed by the state.

  • Getting a clear understanding of cost of services and which insurance providers are accepted.

For a referral, call HPA at 521-8995.
