12 senior scholar-athletes will be honored at banquet

Twelve Hawai'i high school seniors will be honored as football scholar-athletes at a banquet May 6 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.

The banquet is hosted by the Hawai'i Chapter 242 of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

The honorees, who will each receive a $1,000 scholarship, were selected for their play and leadership, achieving a 3.0 grade-point average or better and community service, according to organizers.

University of Hawai'i quarterback Colt Brennan will give the keynote address.

The scholarship winners are:

  • Solomona Aigamaua, Saint Louis

  • Kenton Chun, Saint Louis

  • Mene Coffin, Leilehua

  • Clinton Criado, Kaiser

  • Savai'i Eselu, Moanalua

  • Joseph Heimuli, Kahuku

  • Jordan Ho-Ching, Maryknoll (Pac-Five)

  • David Howell, Kea'au

  • Jeffrey Kahler, Saint Louis

  • Brett Kan, Punahou

  • Zachery Kim, Punahou

  • Matthew Masifilo, Campbell

    One of the 12 will be nominated to represent Hawai'i in the national scholar-athlete recognition program of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

    UH assistant coach Cal Lee, a former Saint Louis coach, will be honored for his service to high school football. Larry Price will receive the Earl Galdeira Award for his support of high school and college football.

    Scholarship donors include Dr. Edison and Sallie Miyawaki, Paul Kobayashi, Russell and Pat Yamamoto, Jack and Marmie Takeda, Don and Marian Murphy, Jack and Francis Tsui, Hugh and Patti Yoshida, Peter and Jennifer Kim, Rie Wong and Bert and Harriet Kobayashi Jr.

    The banquet begins at 6 p.m. at the Monarch Room.
