Candlelight vigil tonight for Darfur genocide victims

Advertiser Staff

The Hawaii Coalition for Darfur will hold a candlelight vigil from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Father Damien Statue on the grounds of the state Capitol Building in remembrance of the estimated 400,000 victims of the four-year genocide.

The event here will coincide with more than 400 similar observances planned throughout the United States, organizers said.

Scheduled speakers are Kelly Rosati, executive director, Hawaii Family Forum; Leanne Gillespie, founder, Hawaii Coalition for Darfur; Father Marc Alexander, vicar general, Hawaii Catholic Church; and Tina Grandinetti, Hawaii Outreach Coordinator, STAND.

The featured speaker will be Mark Hanis, founder and executive director of the Genocide Intervention Network, an organization created to empower citizens and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide.
