Former University of Hawai'i running back Reagan Mauia and defensive end Melila Purcell III were drafted by the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns, respectively, in the sixth round on the second day of the NFL Draft today.

Ex-UH running back Nate Ilaoa was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round.

Five other former Warriors said they would sign free-agent contracts.

  • Former UH offensive tackle Dane Uperesa with the Cincinnati Bengals.

  • Offensive lineman Tala Esera with the Miami Dolphins.

  • Strong safety Leonard Peters with the New York Jets.

  • Cornerback Kenny Patton with the Oakland Raiders.

  • Nose tackle Lawrence Wilson with the Baltimore Ravens.

Five ex-Warriors — including second-round picks Samson Satele and Ikaika Alama-Francis — were selected in the draft, the most since the NFL cut the draft to seven rounds in 1994. Three former UH players were taken in 2003, according to a list in the UH football media guide.

Mauia, who is 5-feet-11, 272 pounds, was picked seventh in the sixth round by the Dolphins and 181st overall.

Mauia said he was stunned to be drafted.

"I thought I would be a free agent," he said.

Purcell, who is 6-feet-5 and 289 pounds, was taken 26th in the sixth round and 200th overall by the Browns.

Ilaoa, who is 5-9, 255 pounds, was taken 26th in the seventh round and 236th overall.

Satele, a former UH center, was taken in the second round yesterday by Miami. Alama-Francis, a defensive end, also was taken in the second round by Detroit.

Mauia, a former defensive lineman, was the third leading rusher for the Warriors last season with 31 attempts for 153 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 10 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Purcell was the fourth leading tackler for the Warriors last season with 36 solo tackles and 24 assisted tackles. He had a team-leading 15.5 tackles for losses totaling 47 yards, and 9.5 sacks for 39 yards.

Ilaoa led the Warriors in rushing last season with 131 carries for 990 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also was the third leading receiver with 67 catches for 837 yards and five touchdowns.
