HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Motorbikers rev up against speeding

KANE'OHE — Speeding, racing and an increasing number of vehicular crashes have brought a coalition of past and present law enforcement officers together to remind drivers today that the road is for everyone.

The first Operation Share the Road, Ride Pono will involve 40 to 50 motorcyclists from three clubs who will gather in Honolulu to motorcade to Kane'ohe on H-3 Freeway at around 10 a.m.

They expect to arrive about 11 a.m. at their destination, a lookout along the Honolulu-bound lane of the freeway near Marine Corps Base Hawai'i where they will sign-wave.

It's an area known for speeding and racing, said Sterling Lau, president of the Blue Knights International, Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, Hawai'i Branch.

The ride and sign waving are a way to bring awareness to the issue, Lau said.

"We've seen a lot of accidents and we're just exhorting our fellow riders to be careful," he said.

The community service project will involve the Honolulu Police Department, the state Department of Transportation and three motorcycle clubs: the Blue Knights, Ex-Solos and Hui Makai.
