Pilot program offers UH employees pre-tax bus passes

Advertiser Staff

Signup for a pre-tax bus pass program designed in part to help relieve traffic and parking at the University of Hawai'i begins tomorrow and runs through June 15, the school announced yesterday.

The pilot program is for faculty and staff only, a school news release said. Eligible university employees on O'ahu can buy monthly passes through payroll deduction on a pre-tax basis where a single monthly payroll deduction will be made before federal, state and FICA taxes are withheld.

To participate, employees must be eligible to participate in the State of Hawai'i Employees' Retirement System, live and work on O'ahu and do not have parking in a university-controlled lot with a payroll deduction.

UH is also participating in the U-Pass program sponsored by TheBus and the City & County of Honolulu, which offers a reduced rate bus pass for O'ahu college students. Under the plan, UH students with valid identification cards receive a 50 percent discounted pass good for an entire semester.

At the conclusion of the one-year state pilot program, expansion of the program to the Neighbor Islands will be determined, the school news release said.
