Auditions set for Hawai'i dance reality show

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

"Destination: Groove Dance Hawaii," a reality TV show airing for 12 weeks starting at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 on KHNL-8, seeks 200 participants to explore a range of dance styles, from jazz to ballroom to hip-hop.

Auditions will be at 8 p.m. May 19 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tropics Showroom. Pre-registration is necessary; deadline for applications is May 11. Contestants must be at least 14, U.S. citizens (or legal visa); those selected will be assigned audition times.

Application forms are at http://www.destinationgroove.com; mail to "Destination: Groove Dance Hawaii," Attn. Auditions, 1050 Bishop St. # 405, Honolulu HI 96813.

The series, hosted by Jordan Segundo and Yasmin Dar, is the creation of Christine Yasunaga, a dance teacher at Iolani School, who was an original dance ensemble member of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "The Lion King."

Judges will decide weekly who stays and who gets bumped. The Sunday night show will be retelevised at 5 p.m. Saturdays.

A related event, "Swing & Groove," will be held from 6 p.m. May 18 at the Tapa Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, when Segundo and Dar host a dinner-dance event with Matt Catingub, Dan Del Negro, DeShannon Higa, Steve Jones and Darryl Pellegrini. Tickets: $100 for dinner and dancing, $35 for dancing only.
