The man charged with murdering missing Japanese visitor Masumi Watanabe appeared in court this morning for his arraignment on the charge.

Kirk Lankford, 22, of Kalihi, did not say anything during his first court appearance in the case.

Honolulu District Judge Leslie Hayashi scheduled a hearing for tomorrow afternoon to determine if the prosecution has enough evidence to send the case to trial.

But the hearing will be canceled if city prosecutors obtain a murder indictment from the O'ahu grand jury that would also direct Lankford to stand trial on the charge.

Lankford is represented by Honolulu attorney Don Wilkerson, who declined to comment on the case and said Lankford's relatives also won't be commenting.

"The Lankford family sends their condolences to the Watanabe family," Wilkerson said after the hearing. "It's a matter of respect."

Wilkerson also said his client is maintaining his innocence.

Lankford is being held on $1 million bail.

Watanabe was last seen April 12 off Pupukea Road. Police have been searching for her since that time. Her body has not been recovered.

Lankford was arrested Thursday and charged on Saturday with her murder.
