Wie in second place after 10 holes
Advertiser StaffHonolulu's Michelle Wie, who said the enormous double greens at the Old Course are "like Mount Everest," climbed into second place early in the first round of the Women's British Open Thursday (Wednesday night Hawai'i time) at St. Andrews, Scotland.
Wie was 3-under-par through 10 holes at the fabled course.
Lorena Ochoa, seeking her first major championship, was leading through 12 holes at 4-under.
There were 19 players tied for third at 1-under with 96 golfers of the 150-player field yet to tee off.
Wie had back-to-back birdies on the 406-yard par-4 fourth and 514-yard par-5 fifth to briefly hold the lead. She added her third birdie on the 340-yard par-4 10th.
Ochoa surged ahead with four birdies at Nos. 5, 8, 9 and 10.
