Woman, 77, dead after crash in Kailua, Kona

KAILUA, Kona, Hawai'i — A 77-year-old motorist died yesterday after hitting a rock wall at the intersection of Lako Street and Hualalai Road.

The accident happened at 7:42 p.m. when a 2000 Honda sport utility vehicle traveling east on Lako Street went through the intersection and struck the wall, police said. The woman driver was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where she died at 8:25 p.m.

The woman's name was not released. Police said she may have suffered a medical problem before the crash.

A coroner's inquest has been initiated and an autopsy ordered.
