NFL: 49ers will wear decals on helmets to honor Walsh
Associated Press
The San Francisco 49ers have been granted permission by the NFL to wear decals on the back of their helmets this season to honor former coach Bill Walsh, who died Monday from leukemia at age 75.The commemorative stickers feature a black oval with the white letters "BW" in the middle. The 49ers will begin wearing the decals during their preseason opener Aug. 13 against the Denver Broncos. All of San Francisco's coaches will wear the decals on their shirts.
The 49ers also are working with ESPN and the NFL on details to conduct a tribute to Walsh during the team's Sept. 10 season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, which will be broadcast as part of a Monday Night Football doubleheader.
Team owner John York contacted California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asking that he approve a proclamation creating a Bill Walsh Day throughout the state. York said Schwarzenegger was receptive to the idea, and details of that possibility are pending.
