Tennis: Honolulu's Lam wins opening match

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Chris Lam cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 tennis victory over Daniel Yoo Wednesday in the opening round of the $10,000 Ursula Beck Classic.

The USTA Pro Circuit event is being played in Decatur, Ill.

Lam is seeded fifth in the tournament. He plays American Michael Venus in the second round Thursday, with the winner advancing to quarterfinals.

Lam had to pull out of doubles when his partner, Rodrigo Grilli of Brazil, was taken to the hospital after cramping in his singles match. Lam and Grilli were seeded third.

Lam moved into the top 600 for the first time in the latest ranking. He is currently No. 593 in the world, and equaled his doubles career high, at No. 567.
