Trash pick-up delayed on Moloka'i

Advertiser Staff

KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka'i - The normal Thursday residential trash pick-up on Moloka'i has been canceled while officials investigate a pile of rusty metal cylinders discovered at the island's landfill.

The cylinders resemble military ordnance and the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit arrived yesterday on Moloka'i to examine the material, said county spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

The county Department of Environmental Management has closed the landfill as a precaution, affecting garbage collection. Half the island's 652 households with refuse collection service normally get their trash picked up on Thursdays, and the other half on Fridays, Martin said.

Once the situation is resolved and the landfill reopened, the county will announce new garbage pickup dates, she said.
