Advertiser Staff

Two Maui schools recently received money from the state, which will be used to build a library and a classroom building.

Gov. Linda Lingle released $18.2 million for a new library at Baldwin High School and a new classroom building at Maui Waena Intermediate School, according to a news release issued today.

Lingle said in the release that such projects "are needed to address rising enrollment at these schools."

Baldwin High School will receive $9,5 million to address issues tied to the growing student body, which is anticipated to increase from 1,651 to 1,716 by next year. After visiting the high school, Lingle made library upgrades as a priority. Construction will begin in December and finish in April.

Maui Waena Intermediate School will get $8.7 million to build a new eight-classroom building. There will be science and general education classrooms, a music room and a computer resource center. Construction is scheduled to begin in March and be completed by June 2009.
