All-Girls Rodeo expects 100-plus competitors Sept. 8
Advertiser Staff
The 15th annual Zip Memorial All-Girls Rodeo is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Kualoa Ranch, and is expected to draw more than 120 competitors from Oahu and the Neighbor Islands.Last year's All-Girls Rodeo, with nearly 400 event entries, 114 individual contestants, and more than $10,000 in prize money, was the largest in the organization's history and the largest such rodeo in the state. This rodeo is sanctioned by the Hawaii Women's Rodeo Association.
The 2006 All-Girls Rodeo drew 91 contestants from Oahu, 17 from Molokai, four from the Big Island and one each from Kauai and Maui. Event organizers anticipate that this year's rodeo, which is the culmination of the 2007 HWRA Rodeo season, will be even bigger.
According to Lu Faborito, HWRA President, the 2007 All-Girls Rodeo is dedicated to the memory of AKA Diamond Jim (Zip) a 9-year-old quarter horse stallion who died unexpectedly earlier this year. Recognized as one of the state's premiere quarter horse stallions, Zip was a popular and "competitive competitor," winning money and buckles in barrels, poles, team sorting, team penning and roping events. Many HWRA members had competed on him in various events before his untimely passing.
For the second consecutive year, the All-Girls Rodeo will feature 3D Mixed Barrels, a special exhibition event that will have teams of men and women racing against each other. This one event, alone, has $1,600 in added prize money.
Other events include 4D open barrel racing; 4D pole-bending, breakaway roping, dally team roping, steer undecorating, calf mugging and goat-tying.
Tickets are $7 in advance and $9 at the gate. For more information, please call 526-1708 or visit the HWRA online at www.rodeooahu.com.
