Big Island man charged in machete attack on woman

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have charged Tionis Kiniol, 26, of Puna, with attempted second-degree murder in connection with a domestic violence incident in the Eden Roc subdivision on Sunday.

Kiniol allegedly attacked a 20-year-old woman with a machete and struck her on the head just before midnight, police said. A short time later, police officers stopped the woman and the suspect in separate cars on a roadway in the subdivision.

The woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she received treatment for her injuries and was released.

While investigating the case, detectives learned of another alleged violent incident over the weekend between Kiniol and the same woman, police said. As a result, Kiniol was charged yesterday with first-degree terroristic threatening and one count each of misdemeanor and felony abuse of a family or household member.

Kiniol was being held at Hawai'i Community Correctional Center in lieu of $56,000 bail in connection with unrelated bench warrant.
