Island teachers at space launch

Windward Community College astronomy professor Dr. Joe Ciotti and Employment Training Center director Bernadette Howard are among 112 teachers across the nation chosen for the Teachers in Space Project.

They will gather in Cocoa Beach, Fla., on Tuesday to watch fellow teacher Barbara Morgan lift off as a crew member on the space shuttle Endeavour.

"We've been waiting for this for over 20 years," said WCC's Howard, who was a community college teacher in Guam at the time of her selection. Since 1984, NASA's Teacher in Space Program has received 20,000 applications.
