Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i golfers won three of four matches during the first day of The Canon Cup at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn., yesterday.

The three-day event features a team match-play format with players divided into East and West teams based on their hometowns. All Hawai'i players are competing for the West.

Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim and Mina Harigae of California, this year's U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links champion, defeated Allie White and Courtney Ellenbogen, 4 and 3.

Punahou senior Stephanie Kono and Jane Rah defeated Marika Lendl and Michelle Shin, 4 and 3. Sacred Hearts senior Ayaka Kaneko, runner-up at last week's U.S. Girls' Junior Championship, teamed with Joanne Lee to defeat Cydney Clayton and Alexis Thompson, 3 and 1.

In the mixed format, Kono and Andrew Yun lost, 1-up, to Lion Kim and Shin.

Kono and Kimberly Kim, this year's Westfield Junior PGA runner-up, competed for the winning West team last year.

The East team leads, 8-7, after the first day of play. Young leads by one

Hayley Young shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the Hawai'i State Women's Stroke Play Championship at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Nicole Sakamoto is alone in second, followed by three golfers who shot 75: Xyra Suyetsugu, Lisa Kajihara and Kathy Tsukada.

Play continues today.
