Lingle releases $100K for Lanai boat harbor upgrades

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $100,000 for the planning of improvements at Manele Small Boat Harbor on Lana'i, which serves as the primary docking facility for ferry commuter and commercial vessels.

The plans will include the preparation of cost estimates and environmental documents needed for a new ferry pier, loading dock and other improvements, according to a news release issued today.

The project is expected to be completed in conjunction with ongoing construction to improve the existing ferry facilities, which will provide a more efficient, hospitable and safe commuter ferry system. The harbor serves the Expeditions commuter ferry, along with many other commercial and private vessels.

"These improvements are part of the state's ongoing commitment to upgrade small boat harbors statewide," Lingle said in the release. "Lana'i residents depend on the ferry service to travel to their jobs on Maui as well as to access services and businesses that are not available on Lana'i."

The state funds will be matched 4-to-1 with $400,000 from the U.S. Federal Transit Administration. Planning is scheduled to begin next month.
