Mental health walk set for Saturday

Advertiser Staff

The first annual National Alliance on Mental Illness walk through Downtown Honolulu on Saturday is meant to raise money and awareness about mental health issues in the Islands.

So far, the Hawai'i chapter of NAMI has raised about $35,000 toward its $50,000 goal. Participants can walk in the event for free, but are encouraged to donate at least $10 if they are able.

NAMI walks are being held in 70 cities nationwide in 2007.

Proceeds from the Hawai'i event will go to expanding the organization's outreach and other programs in the Islands.

Registration for the event starts at 8 a.m. at the Skygate sculpture on the Honolulu municipal building grounds near city hall. Participants will start the walk at Skygate at 9:15 a.m., make their way to the Capitol, pass Honolulu Hale and end at Skygate.
