Hawaii's Melanie Abe in Dept. of Labor program

Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Melanie Abe has been chosen as one of 60 students nationwide for the U.S. Department of Labor's distinguished summer intern program in the nation's capital.

Abe, a junior majoring in political science and global studies at Whittier College in Whittier, Calif., was selected from more than 1,300 applicants.

"The Labor Department's summer interns bring tremendous energy and enthusiasm to their tasks," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao. "The department's interns learn about public service and how to succeed in a large organization and are gaining valuable experience that can help them become America's future leaders."

The program, established by Chao, provides exposure to the inner workings of the federal government and opportunities for hands-on research experience, as well as lectures from prominent government officials, career resources and visits to Washington's historic landmarks.
