Feral-goat hunt to shut down Kauai park

Advertiser Staff

A four-day hunt to control the feral goat population will take place in Lihu'e later this month, a news release from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

The hunt, scheduled for Aug. 23-26, will close the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park and Kalalau trail.

"We have received public complaints about goats dislodging rocks from above the trail," Laura Thielen, DLNR interim chairperson, said in the release. "The hunt will help to reduce the numbers of goats in the park."

Signs will be posted at the trail head. Those hiking to Hanakapi'ai Beach or Hanakapi'ai Falls as well as those headed to Nualolo Kai and Miloli'i will not be affected.
