Joy of Sake set for Aug. 23

Advertiser Staff

The annual Joy of Sake event will be held on Aug. 23 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Hawai'i Convention Center at 1601 Kalakaua Ave. Tickets are $65 in advance, $70 at the door (if available) and may be ordered online at www.joyofsake.com or by calling 808-739-1000.

The Honolulu event will be followed by Joy of Sakes in San Francisco and New York.

The Joy of Sake, organized by Chris Pearce, owner of World Sake Imports and Hana Hou! magazine, offers the chance to sample more than 250 premium sakes in peak condition (freshness and proper handling are key to enjoying sake), many of which are not otherwise available in the U.S.

On offer will be the full spectrum of sake styles in the junmai, ginjo, daiginjo and kimoto categories, including recipients of silver and gold awards from the U.S. National Sake Appraisal, a rigorous blind tasting conducted by 10 judges from the U.S. and Japan held every year in Honolulu prior to The Joy of Sake. The U.S. National Sake Appraisal in Honolulu and the Joy of Sake events in all three locations are sponsored by the International Sake Association.

In a first for the Honolulu event this year, appetizers by top local restaurants yet to be named will be grouped next to the tasting tables for the sakes they best complement.
