Tadd Fujikawa, the Moanalua High teenager making his pro golfing debut, shot a 6-over-par 78 today in his first round of the Reno-Tahoe Open at the Montreux Golf and Country Club.

Fujikawa, 16, opened each nine with a double bogey 6, killing his chance of a decent round. He is tied for 125th place in the 132-player field.

"It was one of those days where the harder you try the worse it gets," Fujikawa said. He said he didn't feel nervous, but "I was probably numb in the head."

After his opening double bogey, Fujikawa parred the next four holes. He posted his first birdie on No. 6, a par 4 to stand at 1 over.

Fujikawa, who was playing before a gallery of around 100 fans that traveled the course with him, parred No. 7 (a par 3) then bogeyed Nos. 8 (a par 4) and 9 (a par 5).

A double-bogey at the par-4 10th hole and a bogey at the par-5 11th hole pushed Fujikawa's score to 6 over.

He parred the par-3 12th hole and then birdied the par-4 13th. After a par on No. 14, Fujikawa bogeyed the par-4 No. 15. He parred his final three holes.

"The stretch from 8 to 12 really killed me," said Fujikawa, who shot 5-over par over that span. "I hope for a few more birdies tomorrow.

"I know this course, I played it seven times, but I have to get the distances. I hit a lot of shots at the pins. There were a lot of shots I felt good about. I flew the green — that happened five or six times and I never got up and down."

Kane'ohe native Dean Wilson finished at 1-under 71, and Honolulu's Parker McLachlin rallied to finish at even par.

Wilson started strong with birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 9 to make the turn at 3-under 33. He also birdied the 13th. However, the Castle High alum had a double bogey on No. 14 and a bogey on 17.

McLachlin had a rough start, recording bogeys on holes Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7. He also bogeyed the 13th. But he recovered with birdies on Nos. 8, 10, 11, 15 and 16.

Steve Flesch is the early leader, recording two eagles and five birdies for a first-round score of 9-under-par 63, one shot off the course record. Jose Coceres shot 8-under 64.
