Baseball: Blue Jays designate Clayton for assignment

TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays said today that they will designate shortstop Royce Clayton for assignment before Friday's game against the Texas Rangers.Toronto must decide within 10 days whether to release Clayton, trade him or send him to the minor leagues.
The 37-year-old Clayton signed a one-year, $1 million free agent contract with Toronto last November. He appeared in 69 games with the Blue Jays this season, batting .254 with one home run and 12 RBIs.
A first-round pick by San Francisco in the 1988 draft, Clayton made his major league debut with the Giants in 1991. The Blue Jays were his 10th major league team. He also played for Arizona, Cincinnati, the Chicago Cubs, Colorado, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Texas and Washington.
An All-Star in 1997, Clayton has played in 2,100 games over 17 seasons, batting .254 with 110 home runs and 723 RBIs.
