Top Pokémon players hit Kona Aug. 10

Advertiser Staff

The 2007 Pokémon TCG World Championships will be held in Kona Aug. 10 to 12 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

Pokémon USA, Inc., which produces the Pokémon trading cards, calls the card game "an intellectual sport."

Hundreds of players from nearly 30 countries will compete at this year's event. Competitors are divided into three divisions: Junior Division (born in 1996 or later), Senior Division (born in 1992, 1993, 1994, or 1995), and Masters Division (born in 1991 or earlier). The top 16 winners in each of the three categories will be awarded Pokémon prizes and merchandise, including scholarship awards in each division worth more than $100,000 total.

All players, even those not participating in the competition, will also be able to take part in activities such as league play and side tournaments. Pokémon artists and creators will be on hand for autographs.

The 2007 Pokémon TCG World Championships are open to the public.
