Cycling: German police search home of fired rider

Associated Press

WIESBADEN, Germany — German police today searched the residence of Patrik Sinkewitz, the cyclist who admitted using a testosterone gel before failing a doping test in June during training for the Tour de France.

Like retired German rider Jan Ullrich, the 26-year-old Sinkewitz is being investigated on fraud charges that he may have deceived sponsors and race organizers if he doped while competing.

"The search doesn't indicate anything new. It's routine for the ongoing investigation that's being carried out," said Michael Lehner, Sinkewitz's lawyer. "Mr. Sinkewitz has nothing to hide and will answer all the questions directed at him."

Sinkewitz was fired by his T-Mobile team Tuesday and acknowledged he "secretly" used a testosterone gel before failing a doping test during training on June 8. He declined to have his backup B sample tested.

Sinkewitz competed in the Tour until he crashed into a spectator after the eighth stage on July 15. His positive test was announced July 18.

Sinkewitz said he rubbed Testogel to his upper arm at training camp in France a day before the positive test.

"It was a big mistake and irresponsible toward the team, my colleagues, the sponsor and the whole of cycling to use Testogel," Sinkewitz said Tuesday. "I could have achieved my performance without it."

In addition to the German investigation, Sinkewitz faces a possible two-year suspension from world cycling authorities. Sponsors have also canceled their contracts with him.
