Tennis: Serena withdraws with thumb injury

Associated Press

CARSON, Calif. — Serena Williams withdrew today from her fourth consecutive tournament because of a lingering thumb injury.

Williams was seeded fourth in the East West Bank Classic that begins Monday in Carson, near her hometown of Compton.

"It's always fun playing back home in L.A.," she said in a statement. "And with the most talented draw ever, I was looking forward to prepping for the U.S. Open against good competition."

Williams said she would continue physical therapy. She injured her left thumb and calf at Wimbledon.

Maria Sharapova is the No. 1 seed in the East West Bank Classic. Jelena Jankovic, the losing finalist last year, is seeded second, and Ana Ivanovic is No. 3.
