Construction of a six-classroom building at Na'alehu Elementary & Intermediate School on the Big Island will start early next year through $4,391,300 released by Gov. Linda Lingle for the project.

The project's first phase includes the addition of two general classrooms, a computer center and one special education classroom, a news release said. There also will be a faculty center and restroom facilities, as well as a mechanical electrical and communications room.

The second phase will include the construction of a science classroom and general classroom, a special education office and a student support assistant office.

"Na'alehu Elementary & Intermediate School is an older facility that needs to be expanded and modernized for the benefit of students and staff," Lingle said in the release.

The school's main buildings were built in 1928 and 1939. In December, a construction firm will be selected. The project is expected to finish in January 2009.
