HAWAII BRIEFS
Moloka'i's trash pickup postponed

Advertiser Staff

KAUNAKAKAI, Moloka'i — Today's normal Thursday residential trash pickup on Moloka'i has been canceled while officials investigate a pile of rusty metal cylinders discovered at the island's landfill.

The cylinders resemble military ordnance, and the Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit arrived yesterday on Moloka'i to examine the material, said county spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

The county Department of Environmental Management has closed the landfill as a precaution, affecting garbage collection. Half the island's 652 households with refuse collection service normally get their trash picked up on Thursdays, and the other half on Fridays, Martin said.

Once the situation is resolved and the landfill reopened, the county will announce new garbage-pickup dates, she said.

PUNA MAN CHARGED IN DOMESTIC CASE

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have charged Tionis Kiniol, 26, of Puna, with attempted second-degree murder in connection with a domestic violence incident in the Eden Roc subdivision on Sunday.

Kiniol allegedly attacked a 20-year-old woman with a machete and struck her on the head just before midnight, police said. A short time later, police officers stopped the woman and the suspect in separate cars on a roadway in the subdivision.

The woman was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she received treatment for her injuries and was released.

While investigating the case, detectives learned of another alleged violent incident over the weekend between Kiniol and the same woman, police said. As a result, Kiniol was charged Tuesday with first-degree terroristic threatening and one count each of misdemeanor and felony abuse of a family or household member.

Kiniol was being held at Hawai'i Community Correctional Center in lieu of $56,000 bail in connection with an unrelated bench warrant.

PEARLRIDGE SEWER BREAK CONTAINED

Plant roots caused a crack in an 8-inch sewer pipe Tuesday night near 98-785 Iho Place in Pearlridge, resulting in a leak of about 1,200 gallons of sewage, the city said yesterday.
