Suyetsugu has 3-shot lead in state golf

Xyra Suyetsugu shot even-par 72 yesterday to take a three-stroke lead into today's final round of the Hawai'i State Women's Stroke Play Championship.

Suyetsugu, a University of Hawai'i senior, has a two-round total of 147 at the 6,050-yard Mid-Pacific Country Club layout.

Lisa Kajihara (75) and Nicole Sakamoto (76) share second, with Kathy Tsukada (76) and Hayley Young (78) tied for fourth.

HAWAI'I GIRLS IN SECOND AT JUNIOR AMERICAS CUP

Kristina Merkle and Anna Jang each shot 2-over-par 74 yesterday as Hawai'i moved into second place at the 30th Girls Junior Americas Cup at Portland, Ore.

Britney Yada's 78 gave Hawai'i a three-person total of 226 and a two-day total of 23-over-par 455. Tamara Surtees (82) is also a team member.

Southern California, sparked by Lee Lopez's 73—141, leads with a 5-over 437 total.

The tournament brings together an international field of 18 teams with girls ages 14-17 representing 12 Western states, two Canadian provinces and Mexico.


TENNIS

TAKATA, SHIBUYA UPSET BRUGGEMAN, CHEN

The eighth-seeded team of Gregg Takata and Chad Shibuya upset third seeds and two-time former champions Michael Bruggeman and Erich Chen, 6-4, 6-2, last night in a quarterfinal match of the Blue Moon Men's Night Doubles tournament at the Kailua Racquet Club.

In another quarterfinal, top seeds Minh Le and Wei-Yu Su defeated sixth seeds Mikey Lim and Thomas Shubert, 6-3, 7-5.

Tonight's 6 o'clock semifinal matches No. 2 seeds Mika Maatta and Jan Axel Tribler against fourth seeds Jesse Paer and Bradley Lum-Tucker.

Shibuya and Takata will meet Le and Su in the other semifinal, scheduled to start at 7:15.

FIFTH-SEEDED LAM WINS OPENING MATCH

Honolulu's Chris Lam cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Daniel Yoo yesterday in the opening round of the $10,000 Ursula Beck Classic.

The USTA Pro Circuit event is being played in Decatur, Ill.

Lam is seeded fifth in the tournament. He plays American Michael Venus in the second round today, with the winner advancing to quarterfinals.

Lam had to pull out of doubles when his partner, Rodrigo Grilli of Brazil, was taken to the hospital after cramping in his singles match. Lam and Grilli were seeded third.

Lam is ranked No. 593 in the world in singles.

TOP COACHES FEATURED AT KAISER SYMPOSIUM

Some of the state's top youth and prep coaches will speak at the AYSO Hawai'i Coaching Symposium Aug. 12 at Kaiser High School.

The symposium runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. The cost is $10 and includes lunch.
