Baseball: A's put Chavez on 15-day disabled list

OAKLAND, Calif. — Athletics third baseman Eric Chavez was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of lower back spasms before today's game against the Los Angeles Angels.Chavez has not played since July 26 and has appeared in three of the A's past 17 games. The move was retroactive to July 27.
"When he first hurt it the plan was to go two days to see how things were going," A's manager Bob Geren said. "Now it's closer to the 15-day limit. I did not want to DL him if he was going to be better in five or six days. We wanted to wait."
Chavez is hitting .240 with 15 home runs and 46 RBIs in 90 games. The A's have used the disabled list 19 times this year, the most since using it 21 times in 1997. Chavez is one of seven players Oakland currently on the DL.
"It really hasn't gone as planned," said the six-time Gold Glove winner after Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Angels. "I've had back problems before and recovered from them pretty quickly. This one is a little puzzling."
The A's have had at least five players on the DL every day since April 19.
J.J. Furmaniak was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to replace Chavez. He was hitting .291 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 101 games. This is his second stint with the A's.
