RENO, Nev. — Honolulu's Tadd Fujikawa made five birdies over a seven-hole stretch to rally to 1-under-par 71 today in the second round of the Reno-Tahoe Open, but fell short of making the cut for the weekend.

Fujikawa, a 16-year-old making his professional debut in this tournament at Montreux Golf and Country Club, finished at 5-over-par 149. The cut was at even par.

"I hope the next tournament, all this knowledge I got, will help me do better," Fujikawa said. "I'm really happy I made the decision to turn pro and stuck with it. I think I'm going to do well."

The Moanalua High School student started on the back nine and struggled at the start, going 4-over for his first five holes. But a birdie from about 8 feet on his ninth hole got him to 3-over and ignited a rally.

He would open his back nine with birdies on his 10th, 11th, 13th and 15th to go to 1-under for his round. On his final hole, a par-5, Fujikawa reached the green in two, but three-putted from about 40 feet and settled for par to finish 39-32.

"I got a bad start on 3-4-5, then I really started to get it together," Fujikawa said. "I went out and told myself to bring it in one hand ... you know, five (over par) or better. You know I was at two hands for a while. And then I started to do better."

Fujikawa was followed by a gallery of 40 or so that swelled to about 200, by far, the most of any golfer.

"I was surprised there were so many because I wasn't doing so well," he said.

Fujikawa shot 6-over 78 yesterday in a round that included two double bogeys.

"I actually hit the ball better yesterday, but my distance control wasn't as good," he said.

Kane'ohe's Dean Wilson finished at 71 for the second consecutive day and was at 2-under 142.

Honolulu's Parker McLachlin finished with a 72 for a two-round even-par 144.

Steve Flesch shot a 69 for a 132 and a two-stroke lead over Charles Warren, who shot 63.
