Advertiser Staff

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Honolulu chapter is hosting San Francisco designer Joshua Chen, who will speak at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa School of Architecture auditorium. The talk will be preceded by a book signing and pupu reception at 6:30 p.m.

The talk is part of AIGA Honolulu's Designer Dialogue Series.

Chen, the principal and creative director of San Francisco-based Chen Design Associates (CDA), has more than 17 years of professional experience in the fields of design, broadcasting, journalism and music. His diverse background, as well as having lived in countries such as Singapore, France and Belgium, brings a global understanding of client objectives to each project.

CDA's client list includes The North Face, Joie de Vivre Hospitality, Pottery Barn, Chronicle Books, SFMOMA, Timbuk2, EMI Capitol Records, Stanford Lively Arts, and Urban Outfitters.

In 2002, Chen led the studio in its first foray into book authoring, with "One Color Graphics," now in its second printing as a paperback. In 2003, GraphicDesignUSA named Chen as one of 50 "people to watch" in the design industry. CDA has been featured in Communication Arts for the self-published "Peace: 100 Ideas." Chen also wrote the recent "Fingerprint: The Art of Using Hand-made Elements In Design" (HOW Design Books).

Chen will be signing copies of both books, which will be available at the event for a special discount price of $30 for each.

Price: $25, $15 AIGA members, $5 students
