Laie pedestrian critical after being struck by minivan

Advertiser Staff

A 46-year-old Hau'ula man remains in critical condition at The Queen's Medical Center this morning after being struck by a minivan last night in Lai'e.

The accident occurred at 9:10 p.m. in front of the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Police said the female driver of the red 2008 Dodge Avenger was driving in the turn lane when she struck the pedestrian, who was not in a crosswalk. The woman, from North Carolina, is visiting family on the North Shore.

The pedestrian suffered a broken left leg and head injuries. Police said speed may have been a factor and that the area is dimly lit. It was raining when the accident occurred, police said, making for wet road conditions. Alcohol was not a factor.
