Revolution LLC, the company established by Steve Case, the Hawai'i-born billionaire, has launched his effort to build sustainable destination resort communities with a 650-acre luxury resort community in Cacique, Costa Rica.

The Punahou School graduate was joined by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias Sanchez to unveil the plans that will be developed by Case's Revolution Places, an operation intended to bring hospitality partners and lifestyle brands together to develop a vacation experience retaining local environment and culture.

The $800 million resort on Costa Rica's northwest coast is scheduled to begin opening in phases starting in 2010.

"Costa Rica reminds me of Hawaii when I was born there nearly 50 years ago," said Case in a press statement. Case's fortune primarily stems from his role as a co-founder of AOL. He also is the largest shareholder in Maui Land and Pineapple Co. and Grove Farm Co. on Kaua'i.

"We are aiming to take the things that make authentic Hawaii so special, such as the connections to the local people, restaurants, shops and the spirit of aloha, while bringing together the best brands and applying the best principles and practices of today. Our goal is to break new ground as we strive to make Cacique, Costa Rica, the best resort in the world — and a model for a new kind of resort for the next generation."
