Lingle tags nearly $10.2M for Big Island school building

Gov. Linda Lingle has released nearly $10.2 million for construction of a new classroom building at Kea'au Middle School on the Big Island.

The new $10,185,000 facility, which will address overcrowding at the school, will include five science classrooms, an industrial technology classroom, a special education classroom, a faculty center, a computer resource center, a student services coordinator/educational assistant office, a custodial closet and a mechanical communications room.

"These classrooms will provide the students at Kea'au Middle School the opportunity to engage in science, industrial arts and computer courses," Lingle said in a news release issued today.

"My administration remains committed to ensuring that we provide Hawai'i's students with a strong base in science, technology, engineering and math. We will also continue to work diligently with the schools to provide the classrooms they need to support the growth of these programs."

Lingle last year released $645,000 for design of the building. Design is to be completed in December. Construction is scheduled to begin in August and expected to be completed in July 2009.
