Island-born chef to be on Food Network's 'Iron Chef'

Advertiser Staff

Former local boy Tony Liu, executive chef of New York's August restaurant, will square off against famed restauranteur Mario Batali on Food Network's "Iron Chef" with the first segment airing Aug. 5. (Check local listings.)

August, on Bleecker Street in the West Village, received two stars from the New York Times recently. It's said to be exceedingly difficult to get a table there.

The show is likely to be a good-natured competition: Liu, a graduate of Kaiser High School and Kapi'olani Community College's culinary program before attending the Culinary Institute of America, once worked for Batali, at famed Babbo restaurant in New York.

Liu worked at Roy's Restaurant and 3660 on the Rise and The Lodge at Ko'ele, as well as a number of other places, before departing for the Mainland.
