KANE'OHE
Fishing in bay to be discussed

Advertiser Staff

Native Hawaiian fisherman Uncle Jerry Kaluhiwa will be the guest speaker at the next free Heritage Series Lecture at 1 p.m. Sunday at Kane'ohe Public Library.

Kaluhiwa will discuss Kane'ohe Bay fishing practices, including the "kapu" system that was used by Hawaiians as a conservation means to ensure a supply of fish for the community and to protect the fishing areas in the bay. Kaluhiwa will also talk about limu propagation and the various types of seaweed found in Kane'ohe.

The lecture is sponsored by the Ko'olau Foundation in partnership with the Ko'olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club and is part of the Celebrate Kane'ohe project.
