Sawicki wins cycling title

The Mililani-Waip'io 6-and-under girls softball team knocked off East Anaheim (Calif.) in two games to take the championship of the 2007 Bobby Sox Softball Tournament of Champions in La Mirada, Calif. Mililani-Waip'io won the first game, 8-3, on the strength of Jonelle Visitacion and Jaslyn Dumlao, who combined to strike out 10. Monique "Pua" Sawicki, a former Mililani resident now living in California, captured the women's title at the USA Cycling 24 Hour Solo National Mountain Bike Championships.

Sawicki, who ran cross country at Chaminade, completed 18 14-mile laps in Wausau, Wis., last weekend to finish a lap ahead of second-place finisher Rebecca Rusch.

LOCAL YOUTHS PLACE AT NATIONAL RODEO

Raisha Grace of Kealakekua finished 31st in breakaway roping and Marin Lorne of Hale'iwa finished 46th in pole bending at the National High School Finals Rodeo, July 22 to 28, in Springfield, Ill.

Lorne, the O'ahu District High School champion in pole bending and goat tying, was competing in her third straight national rodeo. She also finished 151st in goat tying at nationals.

There were 1,500 competitors from 40 states, five Canadian provinces and Australia in the event.
