Santos wins world handboarding event

Advertiser Staff

Kai Santos won the grand championship of the Redwings Memorial World Championships of Handboarding last weekend.

The two-day contest was run in 3- to 5-foot waves at Point Panic, O'ahu.

Santos scored 54.5 points in the grand final to edge Wyatt Tillotson by seven points.

Earlier in the contest, Santos also edged Tillotson to win the senior men's division (for ages 31 to 40). The top two finishers in each age division qualified for the grand final.

Pedro Refuerzo won both the open and masters divisions (ages 41 to 58) and then placed third in the grand final. Refuerzo beat Santos in the grand final last year.

Other division winners were: Kelly Craven (women), Pili Lehano (junior men, 18 to 30), Jeff Middleton (dugongs, 58-older) and Jarrett Liu (paepo board).

All competitors had to bodysurf waves with the use of a handboard.
